So this is how a ‘deal’ is locked.
Someone puts the tag of ‘Sold Out’ against a Honda City, while someone gets their ‘purchase’ done on account of golden earrings. Then they only know how they feel comfortable to brandish themselves as ‘civilized’ and belonging to a high profile clan.
I have started feeling a weird sensation of fear while mingling with relatives, my own relatives. Fear of what? Fear of being asked what my age is. And the question being followed by (after some random useless talks) suggestions of possible bride-grooms, in oppa contractor style! This fear has discouraged me to commingle with those suggestive people. So this is a usual sequence of events- first, looking at my face, they think and predict me to be a college going girl. When they come to know that the truth is otherwise, that I am doing a job since two years, suddenly they get enlightened about the delay in my marriage! How I am running out of my time to get married and how if I cross the ‘time limit’, all the options of ‘for-sale’ grooms will be exhausted! How difficult, eh? The competition is so tough, that the ‘parties’ stand in hunt for the chance to catch a fine product and they should start bargaining. And yes, Bargaining becomes easy, if everyone puts proper tags on themselves.
Now the other part. Before the ‘deal’ is ‘locked’, the girl is scanned in a way as the groom family has to launch a new model in the market! The checklist includes perfect height, perfect looks, perfect figure, etc. Eyes should be 6/6. If the girl is ‘through to next level’ before bargaining, it comes with a condition- get the Lasic LASER surgery done. The idea is that everything must be done on the expenses of the bridal family. And why not? The groom is for-sale anyways. After all parents have the dreams of fulfilling the wishlist- sofa set, chairs, washing machine, TV of latest model etc., which could not be materialized , the daughter-in-law should bring them with her. If that happens, how well! Talk not of the car. That’s to be brought by the coming lady, of course, isn’t it? That’s unwritten constitution. “A 4-wheeler is our right, folks”. “After all the groom is in such a nice job”. “A high profile job comes with negotiations according to status”. “Car to banti hai ji”.
And how genteel! So much of it that they feel shy in asking for it direct however they attach a price tag with the bride-groom. Without asking for it. Quote unquote. “Please see to it”, “Do what you can afford”. ‘What you can afford’ means 3-4 Lakhs in cash, a car, branded clothes, golden jewelleries etc., so much and so forth, that too for the groom, his family, his relatives…..
The buck doesn’t stop here. All these listings are the premiums in instalments! “After the wedding, we will be mingling frequently”, “you can settle the remaining in instalments too”.
The negotiations, the bargaining, the price tagging and the reverse-tagging, the instalments and whatnot. “Shadi kar rahe hain, koi aur rishta thodi” (“We are accomplishing the wedding after all, nothing short of it, no ordinary relations”)
The deal has to be locked.
